Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare

Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Created by Lord Caitanya Mahapraphu, Sankirtana is the congregational chanting of the name, fame, and pastimes of Sri Krsna. Also known as the father of sankirtana, Lord Caitanya Mahapraphu appeared 500 years ago to revive the original pure God consciousness of all living entities because he believed that this was the only way one could achieve true peace and happiness. However, Lord Caitanya was not just a devotee of Krsna, he was actually Krsna Himself, but in disguise. He saw that we are living in the age of quarrel and confusion (Kali-yuga). An age in which spiritual progress can be difficult due to the excessive amount of problems and anxieties. By spreading the sankirtana movement, Lord Caitanya gave those looking to become devotees of Krsna an example to follow which allowed them to make spiritual progress and attain an eternal life of bliss and knowledge.

You may be asking, “why would others blindly follow him and join the sankirtana movement”, well the answer is simple. It was because of how he presented himself. Lord Caitanya was not concerned about how many followers he had or how others viewed him. Although he is in fact Krsna, he did not act arrogantly because of it. He presented Himself with a humble attitude. He simply chanted the holy name of Krsna because that’s what sankirtana is, the chanting of the holy name of the lord. He did this because by chanting His name, it allows one to elevate themselves to a fully spiritual life since God is omnipotent. He is present in His name, so when we chant His name, He is with us. Consequently, Lord Caitanya gained others' respect and convinced them to join him in sankirtana.

As a devoted servant of Lord Caitanya’s mission, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada sailed to the United States to found the Krsna consciousness movement. Thus rendering a great service to humanity in this Age of Quarrel and Confusion. Following in Lord Caitanya’s footsteps, Srila Prabhupada performed sankirtana alone until he attracted a few young men with his spirit and determination. Since then, the names of Hare Krishna and Lord Caitanaya Mahaprabhu have become household words in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and other areas throughout the world. Those who were once leading confused and chaotic lives are now filled with transcendental happiness and have found peace through sankirtana. As a result of our disorganized world, we are pushed towards utter forgetfulness of God: by following the sankirtana movement we can powerfully reassert the genuine spiritual character of man and live better lives..
